Few pests get people on the phone faster than cockroaches. Across the Eastern Suburbs, most indoor problems are caused by German cockroaches, a small tan species that breeds quickly and hides in the warm, tight spots of a kitchen: hinges, the back of the fridge, the motor of the dishwasher and gaps around pipes. In older blocks of flats they also move between units through shared plumbing and wall cavities.
Larger, darker cockroaches sometimes wander in from gardens, drains and compost bins, especially on warm, humid nights. These are usually outdoor cockroaches, and a treatment around the outside of the house is often the answer.

To get ready, empty the cupboards under the sink and around the stove, wipe the benches and store food in sealed containers. Hold off on surface sprays for a few days beforehand, as they can scatter cockroaches and put them off the bait. For a week or two afterwards, you may see a few more cockroaches out in the open as the bait takes effect. That is a normal part of the process, and it usually settles within a fortnight.
