Carpet beetles are tiny, rounded beetles with a mottled pattern of black, white and yellow or brown. The adults live outdoors on flowers, but they lay eggs indoors, and the hairy little larvae feed on wool, silk, fur, feathers and pet hair. In the Eastern Suburbs, with so many period homes full of wool carpet, Persian rugs, antique furniture and wardrobes of winter woollens, they are a regular call.
Signs include bare or thin patches in carpet along skirting boards and under furniture, holes in jumpers and blankets, and small bristly larvae or shed skins in corners and drawers.
